REPRESSION entstand für die Einzelausstellung VOGLIAMO TUTTO im Museum Villa Croce, Genua.
"Repression" ist Teil einer Reihe von monumentalen Videoinstallationen, die sich auf Alltagsgegenstände konzentriert. Die Videos sind in Nahaufnahmen gefilmt und in Sequenzen von Einzelsekunden zerlegt, die ich neu anordne. Durch die Manipulation von Größe, Volumen und Geschwindigkeit verliert das Motiv nicht nur die Verbindung zum ursprünglichen Kontext, sondern bietet auch die Möglichkeit einer politischen Reflexion.

Repression was developed for a solo show at Museum Villa Croce, Genoa. I chose the title VOGLIAMO TUTTO after a novel of Nanni Balestrini (1971).
"Repression" is part of a series of monumental video installations that focus on everyday objects. The videos are filmed in close-up views and cut into very short sequences of split seconds I reconstruct differently. By manipulation of scale, volume and speed the motif not only loses its original context and but also offers an opportunity for political reflection.

REPRESSION wird in einem dunklen Raum projiziert und zeigt eine rote Fahne die lebhaft im Wind flattert. Die entsprechenden Geräusche – ein stakkatoartiges Knallen des Flaggenstoffs im Wind und das metallische Klimpern der Fahnenleine am Mast- bilden einen Klangraum, der den Betrachter umschliesst. In das großformatig projizierte Bild schieben sich allmählich von oben und unten die schwarzen Balken des Bildstrichs vor die Flagge und überdecken sie schliesslich vollständig. Während sie das Bild ausblenden, befindet sich der Betrachter in absoluter Finsternis.Der Ton ist weiterhin zu hören.
Das Bildmaterial ist videotechnisch radikal reduziert, wodurch die Bewegung der Fahne im Wind fragmentarisiert wird. Das auditiv durch den Klangraum hervorgerufene Konzept "Fahne+Wind=Bewegung" wird dramatisch überhöht. Das visuelle Motiv entlässt zum Takt der Klänge ausschließlich Farben und abstrakte Formen in den Vorführort. Der Ton hält zwar das Konzept "Fahne" aufrecht, wird aber beim Auftauchen des monumental in Szene gesetzten Bildmotivs irrelevant. Es treten die Farben und Formen des Motivs in den Vordergrund, die sich dabei keiner konventionellen Narrationsweise mehr beugen. Durch ihre Ausdruckskraft erzeugen sie eine malerische Visualität, die fortan den Raum bestimmt.

The visual motif of the videowork REPRESSION consists of a red flag fluttering in the wind. As the projection progresses one sees two black stripes closing the frame, i.e. moving over the image of the flag until the screen is completely black. The accompanying sound (the staccato of the blowing flag) forms an acoustical space enclosing the spectator. While the viewer is left in absolute darkness, the sound continues. 

The filmmaterial is radically reduced, so the movement of the flag is fragmentarized. Instead of the smooth movement of a flag in the wind only colours and forms are projected without any conventional narrative structure.  The concrete image of a red flag is turned into an abstract coloured field. These coloured areas subdivide the projection field and evoke a kind of pictorial visuality. This pictorial quality is not only reached by the videotechnical reduction of the visual motif. But also by the fact that the continuity of the movement is destroyed and single fragments are recombined.
